Virginia To Launch New Statewide System To Register For Vaccines

VIRGINIA — Virginia plans to launch a statewide vaccine pre-registration system on Tuesday for all residents to register to get a COVID-19 vaccination. This means the state will take over the vaccine registration system from local health districts, state health officials said Friday.

The Virginia Department of Health ordered all local health districts to close their pre-registration forms at 5 p.m. on Friday and replace them at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, with a link to the new statewide system.

Existing waitlists from the local health district websites will be imported into the new system. From Friday evening through Tuesday morning, pre-registration for the COVID-19 vaccination will be unavailable to all Virginia residents.

On Friday afternoon, though, the Fairfax Health District said it will not be using the new statewide system at this time. Residents of Fairfax County, the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church, and the towns of Vienna, Herndon and Clifton who are eligible to register for a vaccine should continue using the registration system already in place, the county said.

In its announcement, the VDH said all people who have filled out a local pre-registration form will be automatically imported into the new statewide system. Residents will maintain their current status in the queue and will be able to search and confirm that they are in the new system starting Tuesday morning.

“The statewide vaccine pre-registration system will provide a unified and comprehensive process for people in Virginia to pre-register for the COVID-19 vaccine,” the VDH said Friday in a statement.

COVID-19 Data

As of Friday, 1,243,231 doses have been administered in the state. According to VDH, 972,493 people have at least one dose (11.4 percent of the population), and 270,738 are fully vaccinated (3.2 percent of the population).

Vaccine doses administered by facility type include 436,526 by hospitals, 354,289 by local health departments, 163,543 by long-term care facilities, 130,000 by community health providers, 115,713 by medical practices and 43,160 by pharmacies.

On Friday, 3,191 additional coronavirus cases and eight deaths were reported in Virginia. Cumulative cases stand at 544,209, and there have been 6,966 deaths attributed to COVID-19.

Hospitalizations decreased from 2,133 to 2,115 on Friday. The current patients include 430 in the intensive care units and 268 on ventilators.

According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, ICU occupancy among all hospital patients is at 82 percent, and ventilator use is at 33 percent.

The seven-day positive average of PCR tests stands at 10.0 percent statewide as of Feb. 8. The state is averaging 24,956 PCR testing encounters per day, which is down from a peak average of 35,090 testing encounters on Jan. 15.
