Danville, Virginia – On Thursday morning, Schoolfield Elementary School in Danville was filled with happy faces as every student was given a complimentary pair of sneakers and five complimentary pairs of socks. Students received more than five hundred pairs of sneakers.
Geico, the Wendell Scott Foundation, and the non-profit Shoes That Fit collaborated to make the offer possible.

Being able to give back to our community is incredible. Warrick Scott, the CEO of the Wendell Scott Foundation and Wendell Scott’s grandson, stated, “When we first came to prominence here in Danville, in the Southside region, we made a community pledge to do something special to help students in our area.”

The first African American to race and win on the NASCAR circuit was Wendell Scott. The Foundation wanted to honor his legacy by donating the shoes because he was born and raised in Danville.

The little things in life, like having fresh shoes or clean socks, are sometimes taken for granted. Therefore, this was just a chance for us to once more utilize my grandfather’s legacy to improve our community and give the young people we serve long-term opportunities,” Scott added.
Hundreds of students in Scott’s hometown benefited from the sneaker donation.

Kelsie Hubbard, the principal of Schoolfield Elementary, stated, “We have a community surrounding us that is willing to support us and every need we may have to ensure our ultimate goal of student academic achievement here at Schoolfield, and that all starts with students being comfortable feeling confident and ready to come to school to learn.”

According to Hubbard, the shoe contribution will assist in addressing a school need.

Students who might only need a new pair of shoes to get started for the second semester are in great demand, according to us. They may have worn out the new shoes they purchased in August, particularly the socks. We identified a significant need for socks in addition to shoes when they came to fit all of our pupils,” she said.

According to Hubbard, the school and the Wendell Scott Foundation have been working together for the past year.

“On behalf of the Wendell Scott Foundation, they sent a book about Wendell Scott to assist us cultivate our love of reading here at Schoolfield. Last year, all of our Kindergarten pupils were given a complimentary book; it was a really good initiative, and our collaboration has continued ever since,” she said.

It was crucial for his foundation to collaborate with Shoes that Fit and a business like Geico to introduce their shoe program to Danville, as Warrick Scott pointed out that his grandfather never had any sponsors throughout his racing career.

“People in Virginia’s Southside sometimes kind of forget about us. Therefore, it was very important to us that something this special come to Danville, and we were really happy that we could do this today,” Scott added.

Being able to work with community members to make it happen was, according to Scott, the highlight of the day.

“Being able to work together with individuals who wake up every morning with the heart and the mind to empower the youth or to improve a young kid’s life, from the teachers to the administrators to the school system,” he stated. Being able to do that, comprehending, and always realizing that there are numerous people in need in all aspects of their lives is, in my opinion, the best part. Therefore, we simply aim to proceed brick by brick with our projects and interesting, one-of-a-kind discussions.

Additionally, Scott wished his hospitalized son Warrick, Jr., a speedy recovery and offered him a special shout-out.
