Bedford, Virginia – Following their Honor Flight bus excursion, 15 of our neighborhood veterans arrived back at the National D-Day Memorial on Sunday with a resounding greeting from friends and family.

An organization called Honor Flight provides free transportation to war memorials for veterans as a way to thank them for their service and to show them how much the community values them.

Veterans traveled by bus to memorials in Washington, D.C. this past weekend.

Friends and family gathered to offer each soldier a hearty welcome home party as they got off the bus Sunday afternoon when they returned to the D-Day Memorial.

The number of individuals who turned up to support Steve Ferguson, a veteran of the United States Air Force, meant the world to him.

“It’s was tremendous,” said Ferguson. “When I came home from Vietnam, after traveling, you know, 15,000 miles to get here, the only people had met me where my mom and dad my brother. So it was a big change.”

During the welcome home party, veterans dined together with their friends and families to exchange tales from their travels.
