The first diaper bank campaign in Southwest Virginia is started by Huddle Up Moms

Roanoke, Virginia – By starting Project H.U.D.D.L.E., which aims to create Southwest Virginia’s first and only accredited diaper bank, Huddle Up Moms is taking action to solve the issue of diaper poverty in an area where many families are struggling.
The cost of diapers can be higher than what many families can afford. The National Diaper Bank Network estimates that diapers account for 15% of family budgets and can cost up to $100 per month per child. In response, the non-profit organization Huddle Up Moms, located in Roanoke, started the Huddle Up Diaper Distribution & Lifeline Endeavor (Project H.U.D.D.L.E) campaign to create the first diaper bank in Southwest Virginia.
“A lot of mothers were inquiring if you guys distribute diapers. Do you provide wipes? We soon came to the conclusion that there isn’t another program or organization in Roanoke or the surrounding area that offers diapers. Additionally, we soon discovered that low-income families cannot receive diapers through federal or state financing, said Hannah Goodman, director of support for Huddle Up Moms.
HUM has been giving away diapers, formula, and baby items to underprivileged families since the opening of its Support Shop in 2022. Although the group currently helps more than 125 mothers each month, demand has much-exceeded supply. Diaper poverty affects nearly one-third of families in Southwest Virginia, which can have serious repercussions for both parents and kids.
“Your child cannot attend daycare if they do not have adequate diapers. Daycares won’t accept them unless you provide diapers. Families experiencing diaper shortages typically struggle to make ends meet, missing up on one to two days of work in the process. “It just snowballs,” Goodman remarked.
Through Project H.U.D.D.L.E., HUM hopes to raise $120,000 to address this situation. The money will go toward starting the diaper bank and ensuring that they have enough for years to come.
Not only will we be able to connect with Roanoke mothers, but also the surrounding counties and the Roanoke Valley. Until you reach Knoxville, there won’t be a diaper bank west of us. Until you reach Richmond and Harrisonburg, there are no diaper banks north or east of us. In order to serve every mother, every family, and every child, we want to close the gap with those other diaper banks,” Goodman stated.
In order to make this essential resource a reality, Huddle Up Moms is requesting community cooperation as it prepares to start its diaper bank in April.
