The executive vice president of Carter Bank & Trust passes away

Roanoke, Virginia – Richard Owen, Executive Vice President of Mortgage Banking and Corporate Sales Director, passed away unexpectedly, according to Carter Bank. A day before turning fifty-five, on January 25, 2025, Owen passed away.
Owen, a native of Roanoke, has a proven track record of accomplishment in the financial services industry. For almost ten years, he oversaw the daily operations of the bank’s corporate sales and mortgage departments. Upon joining Carter Bank in 2017, Owen played a pivotal role in the bank’s expansion by founding its mortgage section. Carter Bank said that the mortgage portfolio increased to around $650 million under his direction.
In order to improve the client experience, Owen also helped establish the bank’s Corporate Sales Team, which simplifies discussions about sales strategies across various business divisions.
“Richard was instrumental in transforming Carter Bank into the business it is today. I’m happy to report that Richard was my buddy for more than thirty years in addition to being my coworker. I’ll cherish the many happy memories of our time spent laughing and working together. We shall always carry his memory and energy close to our hearts,” stated Litz Van Dyke, CEO of Carter Bank.
We will really miss Richard, who was a unique individual. Along the way, he had a beneficial impact on a great number of people and was successful not only at business but also in life. “He lived life to the fullest and was passionate about everything he did,” said Brad Langs, president of Carter Bank.
According to Carter Bank, Owen had a special talent for relating to and forming relationships with everyone in his vicinity. He was also a mentor, friend, and storyteller to many. He had a strong commitment to the bank’s principles, particularly fostering relationships with clients and coworkers to assist them thrive.
Along with his parents, Clark Owen Jr. and Emilie Owen, his partner, Elza, and her daughter, Esmeralda, Owen is survived by two daughters, Kate and Laney. There will be a memorial service later.
