Low Moor, Virginia – As the new school year gets underway, students in our hometowns are returning to their studies. How can we, as educators and parents, make sure that our children aren’t losing focus on the lessons they are learning?

According to recent studies, students’ attention spans range from 10 to 15 minutes on average, and they start to decline after 10 to 30 minutes of a presentation. The fact that 17% of high school students are not paying attention during lectures is even more concerning. Every year, a lot of schools all throughout the nation try to combat that. However, what is the best way to maintain pupils’ interest in their studies for the whole school day?

As you may imagine, the response will differ greatly over the pre-kindergarten to twelfth-grade continuum. However, at Alleghany Highlands Public Schools, one of the things we try to do is put a lot of emphasis on student engagement, what would pique the children’s attention, and how to make learning relevant for them. assisting kids in creating links with the real world. While in kindergarten that might be watching caterpillars hatch, in high school that might be welding in a booth. We want to ensure that we’re learning as much as we can. That will keep our children’s interests and futures front and center,” stated Kim Halterman, superintendent of Alleghany Highlands Public Schools.

Since every student learns differently, it’s imperative to establish a teaching strategy that works for them and equips them with the skills they need to succeed. According to Superintendent Halterman, this is where competent teachers’ experience is useful.

Consequently, while developing any form of lesson plan or strategy for interacting with students, teachers will consider a number of factors. Although it is generally true that children must satisfy specific standards at a certain grade level, we will make an effort to accommodate the many methods that children learn. Halterman stated, “Our teachers will employ a variety of tools and strategies to make it happen.

Halterman stated that in order to solve the issue of regaining concentration both within and outside of the classroom, it is critical that parents and schools collaborate. She offers some pointers for doing that.

“The best advice I believe any of us could give someone is to just be involved in school and to have conversations about learning, life, and how essential it is to know things and never stop learning. Despite the fact that it seems so simple, it’s actually very significant. Limiting kids’ access to distractions when it makes sense is another thing we can do. That could therefore be due to outside influences, buddy distractions, or other such factors. Halterman commented, “So, it’s nice when they can have some protected time to think about their schoolwork.”

Students who routinely exercise and get more sleep, among other factors, have longer attention spans, according to a Santa Maria College study.

ADHD and other attention issues affect a student’s capacity to retain information and maintain concentration.
