Salem, Virginia – Earlier this month, a Smyth County Deputy’s family experienced a theft.

During a traffic stop, Deputy Hunter Reedy was shot while performing his duties. Three small children and his wife are left behind by the 27-year-old. Nothing will ease their sorrow, but a nearby sports team wanted to provide a healing evening for them.

Sergeant Clayton Smith stated, “He would be telling us that we need to move forward.”

The first pitch was thrown by Reedy’s nine-year-old son.

Allen Lawrence, general manager, tells us the value of having your community during a difficult time.

“We consider ourselves to be much more than just baseball players; we want to become deeply embedded in the community. Lawrence remarked, “Once more, if we can contribute in any small way to this or anyone else’s healing process, that is extremely important to us.”

Those closest to Deputy Hunter Reedy said he was like a gigantic teddy bear.

He had a strong focus on his family. Smith remarked, “He loved his kids and he loved his wife.”

To assist anyone impacted by the unfortunate tragedy in diverting their attention, the AWARE Foundation arranged the event.

Smith claimed that the outpouring of support had aided in the recovery process.

“It was wonderful to see all those guys here helping us during this difficult time. They prayed for us, offered to help in any way they could, some of them even shared their own experiences, and offered to chat with any of us who needed to talk to someone who hadn’t gone through the same things,” Smith said.

Michael Fedorchuk, the other deputy who was shot, was also there at the game with his family.

They rely on each other and find courage in the midst of disaster.
