Roanoke man arrested for second-degree murder in connection to November shooting

ROANOKE, Va. – UPDATE – Feb. 3, 2021

Roanoke Police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection to a November 2020 shooting.

Authorities said Herbert Giddens Jr., of Roanoke, was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the death of Nathaniel Briggs.

According to police, Giddens Jr. was their subject throughout the course of the investigation.

He was located on Tuesday and police said the indictments were served without incident.

UPDATE – Nov. 25, 2020

Roanoke police have released the name of the man shot and killed in Northwest Roanoke on Monday night.

Nathaniel Briggs, 36, of Roanoke, died after being shot in the 2400 block of Centre Avenue NW.

While police said all parties involved in this shooting have been identified, no one has been arrested.

Detectives will continue to update the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, who will ultimately determine if charges will be placed regarding this incident, according to police.

A man is dead after police say he was shot in northwest Roanoke on Monday night.

According to the Roanoke City Police Department, officers responded to a report of someone with a gunshot wound around 10:15 p.m. in the 2400 block of Centre Avenue NW.

When officers arrived, they say they found a man with what looked like serious injuries inside a house.

Officers say they did first aid until Roanoke Fire-EMS arrived at the scene. The man was pronounced dead on the scene by first responders, and police say his identity will be released after his family is notified.

According to the police department, everyone involved remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Those involved all knew each other and the victim, police say.

Detectives say they have consulted with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and at this time no charges have been filed. According to the police department, they are not searching for other suspects and the investigation is ongoing.
