Roanoke County Public Schools seeking bus drivers amid shortage

Roanoke, Virginia – It’s no secret that bus drivers are in short supply in American schools nationwide. The effects are being felt by Roanoke County Public Schools as well, which is considering hiring more drivers.

“Some days, we have to rearrange the routes because some of our drivers are unwell, and on other afternoons when we have a short route, we have to return and pick up the students to transport them home. We are therefore going through some of those things, but we have managed to avoid any major issues. Because of this, we are actively seeking additional drivers to join our team, according to RCPS Superintendent Dr. Ken Nicely.

The district is seeking ten or more drivers, to put it politely. Competitive salaries, recruiting and referral bonuses, and other benefits are provided by RCPS. Aside from the perks, he claimed the work is quite fulfilling.

“It really comes down to the kids, how you can make a difference, and being the kind of person who is there to give them a friendly “hello” and watch out for them,” Nicely added.

He goes on to say that someone searching for part-time work or retiring would be ideal for this position. What therefore is needed for the position?

We’ll assist them in obtaining their commercial driver’s license, which they must obtain. We will therefore handle their training and all other requirements, so everything will be covered. No one has to go out and spend any additional money. To drive for us, you must obtain your commercial driver’s license; we’ll take care of the rest. Nicely added, “We also have other drivers that operate vehicles for some special needs [students], and you don’t need a commercial driver’s license for that.

It’s also crucial to remember that drivers put in five hours a day at work.
