Local artists share poems at Roanoke coffee shop amid National Poetry Month

ROANOKE, Va. — National Poetry Month — which takes place in April — was created to remind the public that poets play an essential role in our culture, so what better way to celebrate than by creating your own poetry?
This monthlong holiday was launched in 1996 by the Academy of American poets, but 25 years later, people are still enjoying the literary work.
WFXR News’ Hazelmarie Anderson joined several local artists at Morning Brew Coffee Company in Roanoke on Thursday, April 15 to learn about the role poetry plays in their lives, as well as hear some of their pieces. Those artists include Bryan “Harvest Blaque” Hancock, Taylor O’Lynn, and Jojo Friday, as well as the Morning Brew Coffee Company owner, Toya Jones.
Poetry has been around for thousands of years, but the modern version likely appeared in the 1900s.
Writing poems is also a great way to improve your vocabulary, as well as test your brain.
