How Roanoke reacts to winter conditions

Roanoke, Virginia – On Friday, VDOT urged residents to stay off the roads as snow continued to fall throughout the evening in Roanoke.

All flights into and out of Charlotte were canceled on Friday, along with a number of flights at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport.

Additionally, a Saturday am flight to Atlanta and a flight arriving from Atlanta had to be canceled.

Even though it was winter, there were still plenty of people in downtown Roanoke, even though the crowd wasn’t your usual Friday night.

It’s Roanoke, winter, and snowing, and it’s fantastic! We live in the Old Southwest! “We adore downtown,” Roanoke resident Jan Dillon said. Chris Tamplin continued, “We thought that was the quickest way to do it and not have to cook and clean, so we wanted to grab a quick bite to eat and have a friend in town.”

Despite snow and ice, Dillon and Tamplin said they weren’t very worried about Friday’s storm and that the city hasn’t seen many problems in the past week.

Apart from the madness of going to the grocery shop and finding that there are no eggs, heavy cream, or onions at all—the store is completely out of onions, of course. The difficult aspect has been walking around the area where people haven’t swept the sidewalks and it’s ice, and you’re trying to walk your dog, so you’re ice skating with your dog,” Tamplin said. “It hasn’t been that big of a concern.”

According to Dillon, if the roads are hazardous on Saturday, the two will not drive.

One of the owners of Chicho’s Subs in the City Market building is Luz Locano. “It’s not all bad,” she remarked, adding that the weather was the reason the restaurant closed early on Friday.
It’s a little late, but it’s something different, and my kids like it more than I do. “It is what it is,” Locano remarked.

VDOT is advising vehicles to avoid the roadways due to the cold weather and the ongoing snowfall.
