Galax, Virginia – As Hurricane Helene intensified into a tropical storm that affected southwest Virginia, the Galax Volunteer Fire Department responded to numerous calls on Friday.

Additionally, after a tree fell on a brush truck, the department had to cope with its own damage.
When the rising water threatened the homes of the residents on Swanson Street, they were evacuated.

That passed above my porch. This is simply a small step I take. and it was rolling as it came up over that, Samantha Fowler said. It had such strength. I had trouble walking with the EMS. It was taking us a while. In an attempt to free individuals, they had ropes out there.

Chestnut Creek was high in other parts of the city, and several roadways were submerged.

However, Galax Mayor Willie Greene informed us that he was pleased with how neighbors, staff members, and volunteers were all lending a hand.

According to Greene, “If you have an issue on this side of town, then the people on that side of town have an issue.” “We all unite.”

Friday night, as dusk was drawing near, Allen Farmer, a resident of Carroll County, was using a rake to remove trash off the road in front of his house.

Farmer stated, “We’ve been attempting to gather up everything that the eight inches of rain brought.” “And we’re working to clean it up so the state can come take it away.”

And he was speculating about when things might return to normal.

He added, “And nobody has any power.” “We don’t know when it will arrive.”
