Roanoke, Virginia – The entire Roanoke school system was closed on Thursday due to threats made against multiple campuses on the internet.

Police are currently looking into threats made by anonymous parties against several schools, according to Roanoke City Public Schools. Authorities stated on Wednesday night that detectives got right to work looking into the threats’ veracity and source.

“At this point in the investigation, detectives have not found there to be any credibility to these threats,” RPD said Wednesday evening. “The Roanoke Police Department takes these types of threats seriously and is committed to investigating them to the fullest extent. We will do all we can to hold those who threaten the safety of our students and staff accountable for their actions.”

All of the city’s schools will be closed on Thursday morning, according to an update from RCPS, despite the police having stated that there would be more officers on duty at some of the schools for Thursday’s courses.

“Police are investigating and are working with the social media companies in their investigation,” RCS said. “To that end, there will be no school or afterschool activities today, February 22nd, so police can continue their investigation.”

The school requested that parents keep an eye on their children’s social media accounts and discuss the repercussions of making threats.

“Actual threats or jokes about threats will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary actions and may be punishable by law,” RCPS said. “The safety and security of our students and staff is always our top priority.”
