Following a carbon monoxide buildup at the Roanoke condo, residents were evacuated

Roanoke, Virginia – Roanoke Fire-EMS reported that residents were evacuated from a condominium complex on the 200 block of Jefferson Street close to the intersection of Campbell Ave. because of a carbon monoxide buildup.

At 2:00 p.m., Roanoke Fire-EMS arrived. There were reports of carbon monoxide in the 204 Jefferson building’s basement on Sunday.

According to a man cleaning the building, fumes rose up the shaft while he was using a gas-powered pressure washer in the basement.

Roanoke Fire-EMS reported that the carbon monoxide levels were 500. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that carbon monoxide concentrations exceeding 150 to 200 parts per million can be fatal.

Firefighters reported that one person was treated on the spot.
