Ceremony honors Vietnam veterans
Salem, Virginia – Vietnam War veterans were honored in a ceremony on Saturday afternoon in Salem.
The yearly gathering, which took place this year at American Legion Post 3, was organized by the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
James Secrist, a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Marine Corps who saw two tours of service in Vietnam, was the guest speaker.
He gave special recognition to military heroes from every branch of the armed forces of the United States and acknowledged the significant contributions made by the veterans present.
“You possess your narratives,” Secrist remarked. “Your stories are tales of bravery, love for country, and devotion, even though they may not be Medal of Honor stories.”
The national anthem was performed by the senior jazz band of William Byrd High School.
At the ceremony, veterans of the Vietnam War received lapel pins as well as a monument to those who are still missing in combat.
