Bristol, Virginia – The historic Virginia Intermont College in Bristol caught fire overnight, shocking the local population.

The fire was fought all night by a number of fire companies from Eastern Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

A firefighter is currently recuperating nicely at home after being admitted to the hospital due to chest pains caused by the strong smoke gusts.

Firefighters first found it difficult to suppress the flames since they were so big.

It took a lot of water to operate the five aerial trucks with master streams that we ultimately had.
Due to the high volume of water we were delivering, we first had some difficulty getting enough,” Bristol Fire Chief Mike Armstrong said.

As they sat and watched the fire light up the sky orange all night, neighbors expressed their heartbreak.

Tyler Cunningham, who lives next to the institution, said, “It was definitely an unexpected fire, should I say, because this place has been here for so long and it’s kind of sad to see it go up in flames.”

Even Blountville, Tennessee, which is roughly 11 miles away, could see the flames because they were so high.

Linda Edgar, who lives just down the street, was employed at the institution prior to its closure in 2014.

The sound of firetrucks awakened her up.

Even though the college hasn’t been used in years, she still finds it to be a unique and unforgettable site.

“Seeing something like our historic college in flames and destroyed was terrible,” Edgar remarked.

Residents said they are concerned about the college’s third fire in the last six months.

According to authorities, homeless persons frequently take refuge in the abandoned structures.
The fire was reported to have caused no injuries.

Since there may be more smoke in the air throughout the weekend, firefighters will stay on the scene.

According to fire officials, the event is still being investigated, and they are still trying to determine what caused the fire.
