VDOT prepares for icy roadways in Roanoke
Roanoke, Virginia – VDOT in the Salem District is asking drivers to avoid travel on Wednesday as ice is expected to be a hazard on the roads across the Roanoke Valley.
On Tuesday, VDOT spent the day taking preventive steps to make sure the roads stay as clear as possible. Crews pretreated major roadways like I-81 with brine, a salt chemical mixture.
Starting at midnight, VDOT will have crews working around the clock to road monitor conditions.
Drivers will see crews plowing roads, laying chemicals and removing downed trees. VDOT said their priority is main roads and highways.
They will not be able to help with secondary roads until the weather stops and the primary roads are clear.
If you see a tree down on a major road or highway you can report it by calling VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (7623) or visit this website and click on the Report a Road Problem link.
