Construction of a new multi-million dollar transit facility started in Roanoke
Roanoke, Virginia – In the Star City, crews have started the construction of a new multi-million dollar transit facility.
The construction for the new bus terminal of the Virginia Museum of Transportation on Salem Avenue began in late September.
While the project was first met with resistance from local businesses and residents, it is now moving forward at full speed.
Crews have dug up the pavement and are preparing to install utilities and sewer lines in the coming weeks. They’ll then work on the temporary station, which should be operational by the end of January 2022.
The new station will cost $17.3 million in total, including design, permits, and construction.
The goal, according to Valley Metro General Manager Kevin Price, will be achieved in just two years.
“It’s a little nerve-wracking, but exciting at the same time because we get to do something that most don’t get the opportunity to do in their career, being that most transit facilities are 40-year facilities. We’re in a good spot to be able to do something really, really good for the Roanoke community,” Price said.
Valley Metro will begin providing educational information on the routes and the temporary bus stop to riders and the general public.
Valley Metro says it wants to be a good neighbor and is asking for support and patience during construction.
