Amherst County, Virginia – Good news for Lynchburg: the city has been awarded additional funding to assist in enhancing the water quality for thousands of citizens.

The U.S. Forest Service and Lynchburg Water Resources are working together on the Pedlar River Watershed Restoration project. Nearly $2 million was given to the Forest Service for the project to further improve and safeguard the water source.

The Pedlar River is found in Amherst County’s George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. It flows into Lynchburg’s primary drinking water source, the Pedlar River Reservoir. It provides services to about 100,000 residents of the city and the counties nearby.

This will lessen invasive species, avoid wildfires, preserve and replant native species, and help safeguard the population of James River spiny mussels. Thus, those are all of the things that have already begun and will persist for the ensuing years, according to Jason Snyder, the public information officer at Lynchburg Water Resources.

The project also entails increased ecological investments, wetlands restoration, road silt reduction, and tree planting.

Due to its ecological significance, the Pedlar River has been designated as one of Southern Appalachia’s top-priority watersheds.
