Stuarts Draft, Virginia – According to Virginia State Police officials, a deadly collision involving a train and a passenger van occurred in Augusta County on Monday night, leaving three persons dead and another injured.

Four persons were traveling in a 15-passenger van from a solar panel construction site in Stuarts Draft, according to VSP Sgt. C.J. Aikens. On its way toward Waynesboro, a Norfolk Southern train impacted the van’s driver’s side. Three individuals were thrown from the van as a result of it rolling over on the tracks.

At 8:13 p.m., the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad declared two male and one female passenger deceased at the scene. Abner Comete, 48, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; Jacner Comete, 44, of Lauderhill, Fla.; and Wilda Comete, 38, of Lithia Springs, Ga., have been recognized by VSP. It is thought that the driver of the passenger van is Abner Comete.

Ronide P. Louis, a woman from Lithia Springs, Georgia, who was seated in the van’s front seat, was the only passenger to survive. Louis had major but non-life-threatening injuries when he was brought to Augusta Health and later moved to UVA Health, according to VSP.

The collision happened at the intersection of Wayne Avenue’s private road and the railroad tracks. The first call was received at 8:08 p.m.

The engineer and conductor of the train were questioned by VSP, although it doesn’t seem the train was traveling faster than usual.

VSP is still looking into the collision.
