Roanoke, Virginia – Consumers are projected to increase their holiday spending by an additional $200 this season.

A Roanoke College poll indicates that as inflation decreased throughout 2024, wages increased at a rate surpassing that of prices. A recent survey indicates that two-thirds of Virginians intend to maintain or increase their spending compared to last year.

“I really enjoy treating my family, so I plan to go all out while keeping my finances in check,” stated Natasha Anderson, who was shopping in Downtown Roanoke.

“When I come across something appealing, something that brings someone to mind or that I believe they would appreciate, I’m willing to invest more in it,” remarked shopper Marli Dabareiner.

The anticipated increase in spending brings positive prospects for small businesses in the downtown area.

Rachelle Walker, the proprietor of WyndRose located on Salem Avenue, is anticipating the prospects of the upcoming holiday shopping season.

“This could determine the success of our whole year,” she stated. “There’s a purpose behind the names Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.” Our actual sales don’t occur until the fourth quarter.

Co-owner Melissa Mays of Market Street’s Chocolate Paper expresses a positive outlook for the upcoming holiday season.

“We’re observing impressive reports and strong numbers already, so as a retailer, the question always lingers: will it happen again?” “We are confident that it is,” she stated.

Shoppers are encouraged by local businesses to invest their extra funds right here in Roanoke.
“We truly value the support from everyone living and working in Roanoke,” stated Walker.
