Due to Hurricane Helene damage, parts of the national forest are closed

Roanoke, Virginia – Due to damage caused by Hurricane Helene, portions of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests are closed until further notice, as per the USDA Forest Service.
The Forest Service reports that “widespread power outages, severe flooding, fallen trees, and impassable roads” have caused the closure of the Clinch Ranger District and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Due to flooding-related damage, a number of recreation locations on the Eastern Divide and North River Ranger Districts are now closed.
Unless it is revoked sooner, the Temporary Forest Closure Order will remain in force until October 1, 2025.
The Forest Service states, “Public and employee safety remains our top priority.” On Saturday, September 28, the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests commenced the response phase, which involves opening forest roads that provide access to private dwellings and recreational facilities. This project is still ongoing.
The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests have been severely impacted, and evaluating the miles of roads and trails as well as doing aerial inspections to find additional damage will take time. The forest’s subsequent stages will involve carrying out a condition assessment and starting recovery efforts.
“As we begin the recovery and cleanup endeavor, we kindly request the patience and cooperation of the public. Please wait to engage in any outdoor recreation or other activities in the forest until the Temporary Forest Closure Order is lifted.
