Danville Area Humane Society is caring for puppies that were discovered abandoned in a dumpster
Danville, Virginia – A litter of puppies was discovered on Monday in and around a dumpster in Gretna, and they had an early Christmas miracle.
Fortunately, a couple saved the dogs and brought them to the Danville Area Humane Society, where they are receiving medical attention.
“It occurs frequently. Puppies and kittens are found in dumpsters in every shelter in every community. Paulette Dean, the director of the Danville Area Humane Society, stated, “We have seen them in totes, in taped totes on the side of the road.” You never get used to it, even though I have seen this hundreds of times in my thirty-two years here. It’s heartbreaking for the workers here to constantly wonder, “You mean there was yet another person who thought this was a good thing to do?”
The puppies probably weren’t in the dumpster for a very long time because, according to Dean, they were hungry but not malnourished. She claimed that if they hadn’t been saved, they wouldn’t have made it through a day in the dumpster.
The others came together with food, water, and warmth, while two of the ugly ones were removed right away to a veterinarian clinic. “They performed well,” Dean remarked.
The puppies have been vaccinated, dewormed, and fed a healthy diet since coming to the shelter.
The dogs are thought to be Labrador mixes by the shelter. According to Dean, the two puppies that were in extremely poor condition are improving but are still in danger.
Since the puppies are too young to be spayed or neutered, they will only be available for adoption in Danville and Pittsylvania County after December 30th.
According to state law, “animals that are going to be adopted outside of the Commonwealth’s adjacent political subdivision line must first be spayed or neutered, which for us means Danville and Pittsylvania County,” Dean stated.
Like these canines, litters of pups and kittens are frequently left behind, according to the Humane Society. According to the organization, this cannot be justified.
“People need assistance if they come across litters of puppies or kittens in dumpsters, or if they are found alone in alleys or by the side of the road. “Please call the authorities; they need human intervention,” Dean stated.
During the Danville Area Humane Society’s usual adoption hours, which are noon to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, anybody who is interested in adopting the puppies or another animal from the shelter can stop by. During the adoption procedure, individuals are required to complete a questionnaire.
