Children at Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will receive free meals during the summer
Covington, Virginia – Children in Alleghany Highlands Public Schools will receive free summer meals thanks to a partnership with the US Department of Agriculture.
In June and July, meals will be served to people under the age of eighteen on a first-come, first-served basis at certain locations by staff and volunteers.
The summer meal program extension was determined by the public’s interest in the program through a survey.
AHPS is expanding to multiple sites as a result of the program’s success.
“Summer break is an exciting time for kids, but we also know that summer is a critical time for their health and well-being. That is why we are excited to once again partner with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its Summer Meals Program. This partnership enables us to give children access to nutritious foods and beverages. Families in our community are very grateful to our school division for providing this service,” said Debra Buckner, supervisor of child nutrition for AHPS.
Children must be accompanied by their parents or guardians when picking up meals from designated places. Children must be present for AHPS to comply with federal program standards.
