Blacksburg begins construction on new, reasonably priced townhomes
Blackburg, Virginia -Eleven reasonably priced townhomes will shortly be constructed in the Airport Acres area by Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley. There will be a courtyard running down the middle, with five on one side and six on the other.
In order to accommodate employees of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant during production during World War II, the community was constructed.
Even after eight decades, the community will continue to serve the same function of assisting working people with their housing needs.
“This project offers a fantastic chance to give people a place to live close to places of employment, childcare facilities, and educational institutions,” stated Kim Thurlow, the Town of Blacksburg’s manager of Housing and Community Connections.
According to Jim Drader, executive director of Habitat for Humanity, this will give first-time homebuyers and those who commute to Blacksburg for work the chance to establish a permanent residence at a reduced cost, as many people find it difficult to purchase or locate a place to call home in Blacksburg.
According to Drader, “There are always sacrifices made for that by giving these to brand-new homeowners and having them spend no more than 30% of their income on housing, when many are spending 50% and 60%.”
Four of the townhomes will be accessible for people with disabilities, and they will cost approximately $175,000 and have three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The townhomes are expected to be finished by June 2026, with construction starting in early 2025.
