Beverly Fitzpatrick is named a council member by the Roanoke City Council
Roanoke, Virginia – Beverly “Bev” Fitzpatrick was unanimously chosen by the Roanoke City Council to take Councilmember Luke Priddy’s place.
This choice comes after Priddy resigned in May of 2024, with his last day of employment scheduled for June 30. Fitzpatrick will take over and hold the position until Priddy’s term ends on December 31, 2024.
Fitzpatrick’s nomination signals a change in the city of Roanoke’s leadership, guaranteeing continuity and efficient representation for its citizens. Members of the council deliberated and considered options in a secret meeting as part of the selection process.
A citizen brought out the significance of choosing the best candidate in light of the recent changes during the discussion.
“I think that this is an important spot. Even though it’s only six months, our city has a lot of transition coming,” said Alicia Grubb. “I would encourage city council to look at someone who has experience to help with that transition… Hopefully, someone who lives in the city of Roanoke, who has been living and working hard in our communities. Somebody who hasn’t just worked in government in the past and then gone to sit on boards or to their jobs, but who has kept boots on the ground, working in our neighborhoods and communities, with businesses and with citizens to do good for the city of Roanoke.”
Fitzpatrick’s appointment occurs during a period of numerous changes in the city’s leadership. The city welcomed a new temporary city manager last week. After Bob Cowell also resigned in May, council selected Dr. Lydia Pettis Patton, a former Portsmouth city manager, to take over as city manager.
It’s anticipated that adjustments will continue. In the next election, Roanoke City voters will select a mayor and at least three city council members. Additionally, a new assistant city manager must be hired. Additionally, two seats could become available in the mayor’s contest.
