Animal shelter completely full

Roanoke, Virginia – The Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection is completely full.

316 animals are currently in the system and over 100 in foster care.

The facility’s director say their staff is tired, as the organization is legally required to provide place for the strays who arrive, and other shelters that would take them in are also full. Many dogs who were adopted during the pandemic are taken back to the shelter.

This comes just in time for the 4th of July holiday, when the facility usually takes in 30 to 40 dogs who run away from the fireworks.

“We are having to euthanize to make space for those animals coming in. We want them to go back to their homes; we want people to come and get them,” Melinda Rector, Director of Operations says.

Staff members suggest that now is the time to come to the center and adopt an animal.
