The new CTE center’s formal opening is celebrated by Roanoke City Schools
Roanoke, Virginia – With the official opening of the Charles W. Day Technical Education Center, Roanoke City Schools is investing in the future.
Division, municipal, and school leaders spoke at the grand opening.
With 17 classrooms, 16 labs, and state-of-the-art technology, the two-story, 72,822-square-foot structure supports instruction in 17 career tracks.
Superintendent Verletta White’s and RCPS’s Equity in Action Plan, which was released in May 2021 and aims to improve accessibility and community support for Roanoke City Public Schools while boosting equity in the delivery of high-quality instruction, served as the inspiration for DAYTEC.
“Many of our students had to travel across town. Had to give up an elective course to take advantage of CTE courses,” White said.
At the beginning of the school year, the students began relocating into the building. The building’s finishing touches were celebrated at Friday’s grand opening ceremony.
One of the initial students to join DAYTEC was Tahj Thompson.
“I understand why everyone should explore different career opportunities as a high school student. I am more passionate about my future than ever thanks to DAYTECH,” Thompson said.
Although Dr. White stated that kids will be able to master a variety of trades and talents, it’s about more than that.
“Our students are learning not just critical content in these various areas but they’re learning those soft skills that are essential for life. How to start and end a project on time. How to stay on time and on budget. How to keep your word. How to give a firm handshake and have your word mean something,” White said. That’s what our students are learning. They will tell you that and as you go throughout the building, you’ll be able to see that.”
