Free VIN etching service will be held August 23 to deter vehicle thieves
Roanoke, Virginia – Help Eliminate Auto Theft (HEAT), an initiative run by the Virginia State Police, is collaborating with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to make it more difficult for thieves to steal vehicles.
They will provide a free service that permanently engraves a vehicle identification number (VIN) into the front windshield and any windows of a car. The service will be held tomorrow, August 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Etching the glass of a car makes it less tempting to a potential thief since the potential thief would have to repair the glass, which can be a time-consuming and costly process, police and other officials said.
According to the DMV, there are even certain insurance companies that provide discounts for customers whose vehicles are protected by VIN etching.
