Gun violence in Roanoke has doubled since last year
Roanoke, Virginia – Since last year, gun violence has doubled in Roanoke.
Roanoke Police informed the Gun Violence Prevention Commission on the latest crime statistics on Friday.
There have been 31 shootings so far this year, compared to 15 at this time last year.
Homicides in the city have risen more than 300% while aggravated assaults have doubled.
According to Roanoke Police Department Crime Analyst Andrew Reece majority of the victims in crimes were young adults and teens.
“There’s a large clustering, if you will, of victims between the ages of 16 to 25. 60 percent of our victims fall into that very small window in terms of age grouping,” Reece said.
