Student from Roanoke County wins the “Thank a Teacher” art contest
Roanoke County, Virginia – According to lottery officials, the sixth annual Virginia Lottery Thank a Teacher Art Contest winner in the elementary school division is a fifth grader at Mountain View Elementary School in Roanoke County.
Sadie Clark received a $200 gift card and the school earned a $2,000 credit from The Supply Room for its art department in an unexpected presentation on Friday at the school.
Three elementary, middle, and high school winners were chosen from nearly 400 entries, according to lottery officials, and their artwork will be included on thank-you notes that will be given to thousands of teachers throughout the Commonwealth during National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 6–10, 2024).
“Sadie’s exquisite drawing reminds us that our children and youth are unique and beautiful and that, with the help of dedicated teachers, they can burst forth with world-changing thoughts and ideas. I am grateful for Virginia’s teachers and for Sadie’s brilliant celebration of them,” said Blue-Ribbon Judge Wade Whitehead of the fifth grader’s winning artwork.
In collaboration with The Supply Room, IGT, and NeoPollard Interactive, the Virginia Lottery organized the statewide “Thank a Teacher” campaign. According to lottery officials, more than 300,000 thank-you notes have been sent by Virginians through this campaign, and twelve teachers have won trips with a Virginia theme.
The proceeds from the Virginia Lottery, which officials estimate to account for roughly 10% of the state’s education budget, fund several statewide initiatives, including Regional Alternative Education, Career and Technical Education, School Breakfast, Early Reading Intervention, Mentor Teacher, K–3 Primary Class Size Reduction, and School Breakfast. The governor and the General Assembly establish annual priorities, which determine which specific programs are supported.
