Icy road conditions making driving treacherous in Central Virginia

LYNCHBURG (Va.)  — Roads across Central Virginia turned dangerous Friday night into Saturday morning causing treacherous travel conditions.

“There is a lot of slush on the side of the road and that too can make for travel troubles so we are still continuing to encourage people to not travel tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow,” Paula Jones a VDOT Spokesperson said.

According to Clay Simmons, the Lynchburg Public Works Deputy Director they are keeping an eye on the temperatures.

“What we are really worrying about is are the temperatures going to hover right above freezing and is that going to be what really happens or are we going to get below freezing and start getting into trouble,” Simmon said.

According to the ABC 13 weather team, there is a chance temperature could drop below freezing tonight.

“We anticipate being out there and again applying braces and chemicals to help with traction on the roadways but we are encouraging people not to travel,” Jones said.

According to Jones, ice is not the only dangerous element they are dealing with right now.

“We have a lot of tree damage reports coming in a number of incidents involving trees throughout the area,” Jones said.

Those trees resulting in thousands of power outages in homes.

According to Appalachian Power, in Virginia, twenty-three thousand customers are without electric service as of 11:00 a.m.

Appalachian Power is expecting those numbers to rise as ice accumulates through the night.
