Firefighters responded to a junk fire after clouds of smoke observed in the Roanoke area
Roanoke County, Virginia – The smoke from a junk fire that broke out at a scrap yard in the Vinton region on Wednesday night was visible from most of the Roanoke area.
According to fire officials, the fire began in a massive spool of coated wire in the middle of a large pile of metal waste. There was nothing hazardous in the pile of metal debris.
Authorities compared the size of the spool to that of a fire truck. The smoke may continue to be visible for some time, but the fire has been brought under control, and the firefighters plan to let part of the coating on the wire burn off on its own.
There were no injuries reported.
